Mentor:  Christine Henry, HVCC Specialist

Every time someone asked me what my summer plans were, I’d see the look of shock on their face when I told them I’d be working in the mortgage industry.  Walking into Union Home Mortgage(UHM), I honestly never expected to love the mortgage industry or this company as much as I do today.

Everyone knows that starting a new internship can be extremely challenging and a little terrifying at the same time.  No one wants to be one of those interns that returns to school in the fall and has to tell all of their classmates that they spent their summer fetching coffee for their boss.  I truly never expected senior management to be as involved with the internship program as they are here at UHM. I never anticipated that I would gain as much knowledge and experience as I did in the first week, heck the first two days, as I did here at UHM. I definitely never expected to have my own personal confidant to guide me along the way.  However, my transition into UHM was smooth and enjoyable, with special thanks to my mentor Christine Henry.

Upon the first chaotic day, I had 100+ emails in my inbox and had absolutely zero idea who any of the senders were. It was completely overwhelming, but I eventually realized that I had received an email from Christine welcoming me into the UHM family.  With everything going on that first day, it was a much-needed little bit of encouragement.  After sitting down and talking with Christine during my first week here, I knew that she would be a great support system for me.

A few weeks into the summer internship program, I got the idea in my head that I wanted to start the process of becoming an underwriter at UHM. Christine had previously been an underwriter and was the first person I thought to reach out to.  I knew that I could count on her in order to provide me with some insight on the job and whether or not I would be a good fit.  She went above and beyond during our discussion and truly helped me understand what being an underwriter entailed. After we talked about this for a while, I was positive I wanted to pursue this route.

The mentorship program at UHM has been extremely beneficial to me not only in the professional world, but in my personal growth as well.  Whether it’s trying to track me down during any given day, patiently watching her calendar as I have to change the time of our meeting numerous times (sorry), or offering to let me shadow her HVCC interns, Christine has been there for me every step of the way.  I can’t put into words how thankful I am to have someone that listens to me and helps me in this journey as I try to figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life.  Thank you for being the best mentor Christine 🙂
